In person Interpretation - Modes of Interpretation - Simultaneous Interpretation
In some situations, the interpretation is given while the source speaker is speaking, as quickly as the interpreter can reformulate the message in the target language. Normally, in simultaneous interpretation between spoken languages the interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth, usually with a clear view of the speaker, at a microphone, listening through headphones to the incoming message in the source language; the interpreter relays the message in the target language into the microphone to whosoever is listening. Simultaneous interpretation is also the most common mode used by sign language interpreters.
Simultaneous interpretation is sometimes referred to as “simultaneous translation” and the interpreter referred to as the “translator”. These terms are incorrect, as discussed in the distinction between interpretation and translation above. As opposed to our consecutive interpreters used for medical and legal appointments, our conference interpreters are known as simultaneous interpreters and are used to provide interpretations of multilingual conference presentations. Typically, these interpreters are the best in the interpretation field with the highest credentials. It is extremely demanding, and using non-qualified conference interpreters can be disastrous to your conference.
Simultaneous interpretation is used when one person is speaking to a group of people and there is very little back and forth conversation. Most often, there are at least two interpreters per language pair. The interpreters sit in a soundproof booth and use receiving/transmitting equipment to both listen to the speaker and convey the speech in the audience’s language. The audience wears portable receiving equipment and hears the speech in their language at the same time that the presenter is speaking in his or her language. This type of interpretation is most often used in large training sessions and conferences.
